The Diocese of Tuticorin emerged from centuries of missionary activity along the Pearl Fishery Coast, where Portuguese missionaries arrived in the early 1500s under Padroado and St. Francis Xavier spearheaded large-scale evangelization beginning in 1542, establishing churches, seminaries, catechism centers, and the first Tamil printing press at Punnaikayal. Jesuit missionaries like Fr. Anriquez strengthened the Christian community, while later conflicts between Portuguese Padroado clergy and French Propaganda missionaries created parallel “Goa Mission” and “French Mission” factions until Pope Leo XIII resolved the jurisdictional disputes in 1886. After extensive growth of Christian communities across Tuticorin, Vadakankulam, Srivaikundam, Thirukalur, and many inland villages, Pope Pius XI created the Diocese of Tuticorin in 1923 with Bishop Francis Tiburtius Roche S.J. as its first shepherd, later integrating five Padroado parishes in 1930. The diocese was subsequently led by Bishops Thomas Fernando, M. Ambrose, S.T. Amalnather, Peter Fernando, and Yvon Ambroise, expanding significantly in parishes and faithful. Today, the Diocese of Thoothukudi spans major parts of Thoothukudi district, half of Tirunelveli district, and parts of Kanyakumari district, and shepherds over 4.18 lakh Catholics across 110 parishes.
