Christian Activists In North East India Demand Ethics In Economic Development
Guwahati (CBCINews): At a two-day workshop on Catholic Social Teaching organised by the CBCIOffice for Justice, Peace and Development (OJPD) called upon the Christianactivists in North East India to demand ethics in economic development.
"Thekind of developmental model that is pursued in India, while favouring a few,remains detrimental to the livelihood and sustenance of a large section of thesociety," said Fr Charles Irudayam, OJPD Secretary, while facilitating theworkshop.
The workshopwas attended by 30 participants comprising of priests, nuns and human rightsactivists at North East Diocesan Social Service Society (NEDSSS) Guwahati,Assam, on 19 and 20 April. The two-day workshop was aimed at developing and coordinating efforts for just society, and to foster solidarityamong the church groups to make a difference in the Northeast Region.
The workshopconsisted of input sessions, sharing, focus group discussions and open visualdocumentary shows. The workshop was facilitated by a team of experts comprisingof Fr. Rudolf Hereida S.J, Fr. Melvil Pereira S.J, Director of North EastSocial Research Centre (NESRC) Guwahati, Mr. Allen Brooks, Former Secretary,Minority Commission, Assam, and President, Catholic Council of NE India, Fr.Ravi Sagar SJ, director of Legal Cell for Human Rights (LCHR) Guwahati, Sr.Molly Kaniyampady of DBI, and Mr Francis A. Maringmei, besides Fr. CharlesIrudayam. Fr. Varghese Velickakam, Director of North East Diocesan SocialService Society (NEDSSS) was the convenor of the workshop. The workshop led tothe realisation among the participants that the Church has a larger role toplay than that of being a Good Samaritan.
